The End is Not the Point

Mindfulness — By Dave Eyerman

We are a culture built on manifest destiny. Cross the ocean. Go west, past the Mississippi, over the Rockies, to the coast of California. Once there, we take to the sky, the oceans, and outer space. We reach the moon, and then set our sights on Mars.

On an individual level, this culture provides constantly-moving goal posts. Finish high school. Get into college. Graduate. Get a job. Get married. Buy a house. Get a promotion. Always be on the move to the next thing.

Movement, progress, and evolution are good things. It is healthy to be motivated to grow. Yet when we can spend so much time focusing on the specific accomplishments we have in life, and hitting specific goals, we do not value the journey we are on. (more…)

What is Meditation?

Meditation — By Dave Eyerman

Meditation is a broad heading with lots of variations. There is not one way to meditate, nor is one variation truly “better” than another.

Regardless of the specifics, almost all styles of meditation share the same core. The practice of meditation is about taking time to separate oneself from the intensity of our modern life, to reconnect with oneself, and to cultivate presence.

There are some basic misconceptions about meditation worth pointing out:

  • There is no specific experience you’re supposed to have
  • Your mind will not suddenly be quiet. In fact, it may seem even louder when meditating.
  • You can’t do it wrong
  • It is not an immediate panacea for all that ails you. The benefits of a meditation practice come over time.
  • A regular meditation practice does not mean that life will suddenly be without pain.

Meditation is a practice. There is no goal, no specific experience you’re supposed to have. There is no eureka moment of, “I’ve got it! I figured meditation out! What’s next?”

So why do it? What’s the point? What can happen when you do?

If you would like to learn more about meditation and its practical application in our modern world, come join me for a FREE talk at the Nesmith Library in Windham this Thursday at 6:00 PM. I will discuss these points and others in greater detail, covering the deeper how’s and why’s of meditation. We will also take time for a guided mindfulness meditation.
